The Soul of Dance
This new documentary begins with Wigman’s sensational tours across the U.S. in the early 1930s and then traces her career from her days as a student of Dalcroze to her association with Laban and, finally, as a celebrated exponent of Ausdruckstanz in solo and group choreography. Although her choreography is more than eighty years old, it is still fresh and unprecedented. Choreographers Sasha Waltz and Susanna Linke and experts Hedwig Muller and Claudia Gittelman are interviewed and speak about her life and work, as does Murray Louis, a lineal descendant.
Bonus footage includes Mary Wigman’s diary of her dance tour across America; Motion Studies from the 1930s; interview with Wigman’s last student, Philadelphia choreographer Helmut Gottschild; extended interview with Sasha Waltz.
